Tour Garden of JOAN & DAVE POOS

The diminutive front yard will not prepare you for the full acre of landscape behind the home of Dave and Joan Poos.   Starting its transition in 2001, the garden has evolved from a typical suburban yard with a few perennial beds on the property’s border to its present form.

Grass paths meander between raised beds allowing close examination of a bit more than 1000 daylily varieties.  In the rear of the yard is a mass of daylilies (typically 3,000 plus) representing an active Hemerocallis hybridizing program.  Both sides of the yard are framed by large oaks with under-plantings of dogwood, redbud, azaleas, and approximately 750 varieties of hosta.

For shade plant enthusiasts, walk under the arbor and continue on the wood chip path.  Along this shaded walk you will find many varieties of Epimedium, Heuchera, European Ginger, Blood Root, Variegated Solomon Seal, Trillium, Hellebores, Hardy Begonia, and varieties of fern, hydrangeas and other shade tolerant plants.

Continuing past the tool shed, you will find a vegetable garden with an accompanying dwarf fruit tree orchard, raspberry patch, and strawberry beds.  If time allows on the way back from the vegetable garden, stop and sit a while in the Adirondack Chairs and enjoy a panoramic view of beds of our favorite flower.
